“People aren’t original. They follow trends. I don’t, I do my own thing. I believe in freedom of expression. That’s why I got this tattoo. Born free, live free.”
“The biggest issue that you constantly see is diversity. I never see myself reflected in anything fashion related. I don’t see any of my friends reflected in anything fashion related. But I think that the rejection from the fashion industry makes everything exciting. Because then you’re like fuck this, I don’t exist in this world, I can find my own way.”
Him: “I was always into the old school mobsters.. the 20’s, 30’s, and 50’s. I like how rugged they were, and being a tattoo artist is rugged. I always wanted to bring a bit of classiness to the ruggedness.”
Me: “Do you feel like there are any issues in the fashion industry?”
Him: “People follow each others trends. No one is individual anymore. They would follow things like the latest man bun, whereas I’ve been dressing like this for years. You have to stay true to yourself.”

“What does fashion mean to me? That’s such a deep topic. Fashion is similar to art and culture. It’s like constantly going back in time to the 90’s or 80’s. Ah, it’s too much to explain! That’s all I got right now.”
“Well, I’m an artist. Fashion is like a creative mind at work. And I’ve made an attempt to do my own designs. I want to design stuff for senior citizens.”
My friends are cooler than yours.
“Fashion is recyclable. It comes and goes. That’s why style is so important. If we base how we dress off of our style, it would be something totally different. But we follow fashion and trends, and that is recyclable. It comes and goes.”
After a short, but rich conversation with this wise, down to earth fashion designer, he left me with something that I thought that I should share with everyone.
I told him that I am not where I want to be, and he said to me:
“No, you are where you want to be. Everything that you want is already in your mind, and in your heart. You just have to put it out into the world.”
Him: “I’m from West Hollywood, looking to move to New York City. I love it here! And as far as what fashion means to me.. I have a line coming out soon!”
Me: “Really? When will it? Do you have a business card or website?”
Him: “The website is www.etalonbysc.com”
And the point is.. If you are a designer, fashion must mean.. Well.. A lot to you!
Me: “What does fashion mean to you?”
Him: “Fashion is freedom. Where whatever the fuck you want and do not care what people think, even if they think that you look crazy.”
Me: “I agree! What are you studying? You look like you can be a fashion major!”
Him: “I study journalism, but I’m a model, and a fashion stylist.”
