“Well, I’m an artist. Fashion is like a creative mind at work. And I’ve made an attempt to do my own designs. I want to design stuff for senior citizens.”
“Fashion is a performing art. The street is my stage and everyday is a performance. People in America dress so casual because they are so afraid to offend. They take offense to how WE dress, but life is so short, and you have to have fun. Sweat shirts and hoodies all the time are boring! And then people ask me if I have a favorite fashion designer and I say no. Not because I’m arrogant or cocky.. Its just that I’m always changing.”
“Fashion is my whole life. My mom was very fashionable, so I always borrowed clothes from her. I still do! I take inspiration from everyone.”
My friends are cooler than yours.
“Fashion is recyclable. It comes and goes. That’s why style is so important. If we base how we dress off of our style, it would be something totally different. But we follow fashion and trends, and that is recyclable. It comes and goes.”
After a short, but rich conversation with this wise, down to earth fashion designer, he left me with something that I thought that I should share with everyone.
I told him that I am not where I want to be, and he said to me:
“No, you are where you want to be. Everything that you want is already in your mind, and in your heart. You just have to put it out into the world.”
“Fashion is making a statement without even speaking.”
Him: “I’m from West Hollywood, looking to move to New York City. I love it here! And as far as what fashion means to me.. I have a line coming out soon!”
Me: “Really? When will it? Do you have a business card or website?”
Him: “The website is www.etalonbysc.com”
And the point is.. If you are a designer, fashion must mean.. Well.. A lot to you!
Me: “What does fashion mean to you?”
Him: “Fashion is freedom. Where whatever the fuck you want and do not care what people think, even if they think that you look crazy.”
Me: “I agree! What are you studying? You look like you can be a fashion major!”
Him: “I study journalism, but I’m a model, and a fashion stylist.”
“Fashion to me is just what you feel inside!”
His English was not perfect, being that he just came to America from Mali, Africa. But, this is what he did share..
Me: “Do you dress like this often?”
Him: “Yes, everyday!”
Me: “So what does fashion mean to you?”
Him: “I’ve never been in fashion before, but I am an artist! Anytime that you need a photo, I got you! We family!”
And then for a quick moment, he laughs and runs down the block, and then back to me.
Him: “You make me so happy! I’m sorry, I’m a little crazy!”
