“Fashion is about showing your personality visually and not verbally. I am a very visual person. I love colors and patterns.”

“Fashion doesn’t always have to mean money. It’s just suppose to reflect who you are as a person. We have people camp out in front of our store to spend tons of money for no reason. It’s ridiculous. So I’m interested in following your journey, because we need more people like you to push a different message about what fashion means.”

Her: “We just came from a Japanese meet up for people who are into their fashion!”

Me: “So what does fashion mean to you?”

Her: “Well I’m an artist, so this is just an extension of what I do. I am a product developer and I create dolls.”

Me: “How ironic that you say that. You look like a real life doll!”

Her: “Fashion is about collecting things and using those things as a form of personal expression. This skirt is my friend’s design and I got this shirt from Vietnam!”

Me: “No way! I’m studying abroad in Thailand next semester! I plan to visit Vietnam.”

Her: “Wow! I studied abroad in Thailand for a semester too! It was amazing, you’ll love it.”

And that was the spark of an amazing conversation.

I saw this woman and her husband walking by and I decided to stop her because I loved the fact that she blended in with the graffiti art at Venice Beach.

Me: “What does fashion mean to you?”

Her: “Well, my husband buys for me. He knows about what I like more than I do!”

Her husband: ” My wife has never been that fashion conscious, but she gets compliments on the way she dresses without even trying. It just comes naturally for her!”

And then they excitedly spoke with me about my future goals and asked me to take a photo with them. I happily obliged!

Me: “What does fashion mean to you?”

Her: “Everyone is different and has their own individuality, and we should all embrace that. We should all know ourselves and embrace our styles.”

I was curious about her accent, so I asked her where she was from and what she was doing in California.

Her: “I’m from England. I’ve just been here couch surfing. I love it here in California because the people and the vibes are so chill.”

Me: “What does fashion mean to you?”

Her: “Well, my style has grown a lot since I’ve moved to LA. I’m originally from a small town and I never use to dress like this.”

“What does fashion mean to me? That’s such a deep topic. Fashion is similar to art and culture. It’s like constantly going back in time to the 90’s or 80’s. Ah, it’s too much to explain! That’s all I got right now.”

“Well, I’m an artist. Fashion is like a creative mind at work. And I’ve made an attempt to do my own designs. I want to design stuff for senior citizens.”

“Fashion is a performing art. The street is my stage and everyday is a performance. People in America dress so casual because they are so afraid to offend. They take offense to how WE dress, but life is so short, and you have to have fun. Sweat shirts and hoodies all the time are boring! And then people ask me if I have a favorite fashion designer and I say no. Not because I’m arrogant or cocky.. Its just that I’m always changing.”
